As a frequent cruiser I completely understand that depending on which port you go to your give your passport at the beginning of the cruise and pick it up sometime during the voyage. I’ve done this before, no big deal.
Readers take a look at the below and tell me how you think this could go tipsy turvy
I’d been standing on the line for about 15 minutes (on the Jewel of the Seas Feb 28, 2020) during which this older man kept trying to get in front of me (2 places) where his friend was standing. I made sure that didn’t happen (arms crossed and arms akimbo ladies, let these fools know you’re serious.) As the line drew closer to the front there was whispers that there were two lines (no Royal Caribbean staff said this out loud to the line of about 50+ people.) It still looked like one line so I kept going. Finally as I neared the front there was just a mass of people standing there and one staff member said Deck 4 here. Being about 2 people deep it was hard to tell where to go and I realized some people had already skipped the line. Some people were nice enough to move so I could get to the area for deck 4. Of course the man (who had previously been) behind me moved quickly to try to hand his Sea Card over before I did and I looked at him and said “I’m on 4, I was standing here.”
Would you believe the Royal Caribbean female staff member looked at me sternly and said “Yes, ma’am, we’ll get to you.” And stared me down (I stared her back). So she had already processed people who had jumped the queue but apparently I was the problem for speaking up for myself. Was this woman annoyed about a woman needing to be assertive? Annoyed at a Black woman being assertive? (She was SE Asian and the man behind me was as well but Indian.) I don’t know.
What I do know is…
Royal Caribbean do better. This type of mess could be alleviated with more organization for passport pickup. Perhaps in the theater, or stagger pickup times. However, staging it in the hallway where people are trying to get by, photo stations are set up and the rest of us just want to get our government ID doesn’t make sense.
Yes, I’ll be writing corporate. They need to put a new system in place and hopefully this will encourage them to do so.
