Our trip to Venice wasn’t as straight forward as flying from JFK and then on to Venice. Back in the summer I’d decided to buy a connecting ticket on TAP Air Portugal. My advice is to always buy tickets on direct flights when you’re short on time. I knew better, now I’ll do better! Anyway we had scheduled all of our main events for the day after we were scheduled to arrive, since life can be funny, and so when we found ourselves diverted from Lisbon and over to Faro due to fog in the former, and then flown into Lisboa we realized that we probably wouldn’t make our first flight from there into Venice, what we didn’t know was that the next flight was the next morning! So last Friday, February 9th at 1pm we found ourselves comprehending fully that we were to have an afternoon, night and early morning in the Capital of Portugal and not the famous North Eastern city in Italy.
TAP put us up in the Lisboa Novotel, about 20 minutes from the airport. We thought about taking the Ho-Ho bus but it was too late when we’d decided on it, so we wandered around the neighborhood and found my favorite Spanish store El Cortes Ingles. From food to clothes, this is the place to go when you want to try what’s local and at a decent price. (Side note: The one in the Mallorca capital has great views from its restaurant at the top.) We wandered in and the first thing that caught my eye was a Patisserie/Boulangerie and bought a few pastries and a croissant. From there we managed to stop ourselves from buying every delicious looking pastry that was in our view and strolled along until we came across a tapas bar full of locals. We made our way in and feasted on what was supposed to be our pre-dinner fare that we would be having at the hotel. Lots of food and delicious glasses of Sangria later, we weren’t sure if we’d be having dinner, but we did make our way back to the hotel with that thought in mind. We went back to our separate rooms and decided that if we could get ready and not fall asleep within a half an hour or so, we’d go downstairs. We somehow made it and enjoyed some wine and a light dinner on the airlines time. I emphasize light dinner, we were glad that we’d feasted earlier that evening.
The next morning we made our way to the airport with a comped cab and this time, were on our way to Venice as planned!
